The Beast of the Vosges
THE LEGEND
The Beast of the Vosges is a legend that emerged in the late 1970s, following a series of livestock massacres near farms in the Vosges region. In less than a year, more than a hundred sheep and cows were found with their throats slit, without any clear explanation.
The size of the tracks and claw marks exceeded those of any known animal in the area. The few witnesses described a stocky and powerful creature, with small upright ears, a tawny coat with reddish tones, darker on the back, and a short, bushy black tail.
Many theories emerged to explain the attacks: some blamed a dog trained by a vengeful farmer, while others suggested mastiffs trained to kill by a wealthy German industrialist.
The most disturbing aspect is that the beast seemed to kill for pleasure, rarely eating its prey. Several hunts were organized to track it down, but none succeeded.
Even today, its identity remains a mystery, allowing the legend to live on through stories and the imagination of each person.
