A long time ago, in the Sauer Valley, legend tells that the first lord of Fleckenstein, Gottfried, wanted to dig a well into the rock to find water.
Despite weeks of effort, not a single drop appeared. That’s when a mysterious man offered his help, in exchange for a large sum of money.
The man began digging tirelessly. After several days, he invited Gottfried to descend into the well with him. The deeper they went, the more a strange heat surrounded them.
Suddenly, Gottfried realized in horror that he was in the company of the Devil. Panic-stricken, he began to pray with all his strength. His prayers drove away the evil being, who fell into the darkness with a terrifying laugh.
Left alone at the bottom of the well, Gottfried called for his men to pull him back up. As he once again saw the light of day, water finally began to flow.
Since that day, it is said that the Devil still haunts the depths of the well… and that if someone leans too close, they might hear his laughter echoing in the darkness.
